In this industry, magazines come and go for various reasons. Cost, loss of advertisers, shrinking target market, rising digital presence, etc. have sunk many magazines through the years. We recently heard about Skymall closing down soon. The ones that stick around have done well and keep growing. They evolve and yet are still able to maintain a level of consistency that readers have grown attached to that keeps the more loyal readers keep coming back.
The magazines with the greatest longevity tell the reader they are the authority in their respective market. Their staying power speaks volumes. There is not a TV show or radio show let alone a social media service that can boast of an 80th anniversary. Speaking of social media, it's hard to imagine apps and web services like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp staying around as long as a magazine such as Time, National Geographic or People. These magazines have so many iconic covers throughout the year that are ingrained in the minds of the public that have helped solidify the longevity of the each magazine.
So if your magazine is continuing to thrive in your market, celebrate your 10th, 15th, 30th or 50th anniversary in style with a special issue that looks back at highlights of your many years in the business. That tells your readers you have been and still are in the game for the long haul and proud of how far you've come in your many years of publishing. Plus anniversary issue tend to move off the shelf quicker and are kept around by the reader longer than other issues.
What are some of your favorite anniversary covers? Let us know in the comments.
